Watch MTN Access to Art Episode Eleven - November 2007

Hosted by local artist Tom Cassidy at the 24 Hour Comics Day at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

Segment One: Soo Visual Arts Center is a non-profit arts organization committed to exhibiting the work of exceptional artists and making the experience of that art accessible and fun. In their Toomer Gallery, which is a collaboration with their neighbor RobotLove, they focus on artists from the world of design, graffiti and poster art. In their main gallery, they recently hosted 2 artists from Miami whose exhibit featured fantastical inflatables in an interactive playground. Access to Art correspondent Hamil Griffin-Cassidy attended the opening for that show and a new exhibit in the Toomer Gallery. Editor Laura Stopyro put this piece together.


Segment Two: Pangea World Theater
has been producing plays since the mid 1990's. They are interested in bringing artists together from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to create a new aesthetic that will be more relevant to our increasingly diverse population. To work toward this goal they have created programs such as Indigenous Voices, Voices of Exile and Bridges. Access to Art Correspondent Beth Peloff spoke to Pangea's artistic and executive directors about the Bridges Program, which brings artists together to create multidisciplinary performance art.

Segment Three
: "Wall Dogs" is what you call people who paint signs on buildings. Local Wall Dogger Carole Bersin is working with the Kingfield and Lyndale Neighborhoods to put on a Wall Dog event that will paint up to eight murals along Nicollet Avenue in the summer of 2008. Access to Art correspondent John Akre visited the corner of 34th and Nicollet when Bersin and dozens of neighborhood volunteers painted a mural to help publicize the upcoming Wall Dogs event.

Segment Four: Often new bands have a hard time getting booked to play in local bars and clubs. The Diverse Emerging Music Organization, or DEMO, is a non –profit organization in large part powered by volunteers. DEMO gives emerging musical acts the opportunity to play in local venues, by organizing weekly showcases around Minneapolis. Access to Art Correspondent Laura Stopyro talked with some of the people involved with DEMO and attended several of their artist showcases.
